Anne Lamott
Monday, April 19, 2010 |
Herbst Theatre, 8pm
Bay Area native Anne Lamott writes books of uncommon candor,
and intimacy, from the tumultuous frontline of single motherhood
in Operating Instructions, to her six beautifully rendered
novels. Lamott's 1994 book on the craft of writing, Bird by Bird,
is a classic of the genre, combining humor, practicality and
a generous and warm affection for fellow writers. In 1999, Academy-Award
winning director Freida Lee Mock made a documentary film about Lamott,
titled Bird by Bird with Annie, in which she interweaves
Lamott's personal story of addiction and redemption with advice
on the struggles and pleasures of the writing life. Three most recent
books - Traveling Mercies, Plan B, and Grace (Eventually) -
all deal with the spiritual, and Lamott's own journey in the Christian
faith. Lamott has taught writing at the University of California,
Davis, as well as at writing conferences across the country, and
her fiction has earned her a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her forthcoming
novel, Imperfect Birds, explores the power of honesty and
forgiveness in a family facing a crisis.
